I hear the clamour, and that includes Indian fans criticizing the team and players and also India's detractors mocking at team India. (Ironicaly most of them are fans of that team which has been already knocked out of the tournament!)
As I refresh my memory, I can see that India was in a similar situation in the last T20 WC in 2007. India lost their first Super-8 clash to New Zealand and had to win the remaining two matches to make it to the semis. History repeats itself. India has to beat the same two teams whom they beat in Super-8s of 2007 T20 WC and in the same order, first England and then South Africa.
Will India be able to replicate what they did about 2 years before?

LTTE leader V. Pirapaharan is safe and well

While rejecting Colombo's claim of the killing of LTTE leader V. Pirapaharan and assuring his safety and well-being, LTTE's International Relations Head S. Pathmanathan Tuesday accused Colombo of treachery in the killing of the political wing leaders B. Nadesan and S. Puleedevan. Mr. Pathmanathan said it is a crime against humanity that needs to be investigated. Meanwhile, informed sources told TamilNet that what happened in the early hours of Monday was a well-planned massacre of several unarmed civil officers of the LTTE with the aim of annihilating its political structure. At the orders of a 'top defence figure,' an international arrangement involving ICRC, European diplomats and a Colombo government diplomat to arrange safe exit to the civil officers was defied, the sources said.

Political observers compared Monday's massacre with the prison massacre of Tamil liberation fighters in 1983 and events leading to the collective death of 12 senior leaders and cadres of the LTTE in 1987.

Tamil circles also commented that any surrender of the LTTE as pressed by the International Community would have seen a similar fate to its cadres, had it been heeded.

The clarifications from Mr. Pathmanathan follow:

Statement 1:

I wish to inform the Global Tamil community distressed witnessing the final events of the war that our beloved leader Velupillai Pirapaharan is alive and safe. He will continue to lead the quest for dignity and freedom for the Tamil people.

The President and the Government of Sri Lanka needing to carry on and gloat in the planned Victory Celebrations on Tuesday, had their military establishment deliberately come up with the story detailing the demise of the leader of the LTTE. We categorically reject this and wish to inform the Tamil community to be vigilant and to exercise maximum restraint whilst grieving for the loss of Tamil civilian lives in the barbaric conduct of the final chapters of this battle.

The Tamil freedom struggle is a just cause and will not be quashed by the events of the last 24 hours. Truth and justice will always prevail.

Statement 2:

We wish to bring to the notice of the International Community the events of the last 24 hours in the so called safety zone in the war in Sri Lanka.

Subsequent to our announcement that the LTTE had decided to "silence the guns" in view of the unbearable civilian carnage at the hands of the Sri Lankan military and the heavy weaponry donated to it by third parties, we were informed by some member states of the International Community that arrangements had been made with the Sri Lankan military for discussions on an orderly end to the war.

We were instructed to make contact with the 58th Division of the Sri Lankan forces in the war zone, un-armed and carrying white flags. Head of our Political Wing, Mr. B. Nadesan and Mr. Puleedevan then proceeded to do so. They were un-armed and carrying white flags and were called on by the Officers of the 58th Division to come forward for discussions. When they complied they were both shot and killed. We vehemently condemn this action. The International Community needs to take this into account in its deliberations about charges of "Crimes against Humanity" against the members of the Sri Lanka Government and its military establishment. This act is even more unpalatable when one takes into account that the LTTE released as an act of goodwill, seven Sri Lankan Prisoners of War the day before totally unharmed.

We appeal to the International Community to act now to ensure the safety and basic needs of the displaced people who are suffering in the prison camps of the Sri Lankan military. The onus is now on the International Community to see that further war crimes and crimes against humanity are not committed on Tamils by the Sri Lankan state and to force the Sri Lankan state to yield in to the political aspirations of the Tamil people.

Velupillai Pirapaharan is alive

Stating that the leader of the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) Mr. V. Pirapaharan is alive and well, Mr. Selvarasa Pathmanathan, the head of LTTE's international relations, told TamilNet Monday that it was very unfortunate that many of its senior members and leaders have either given up their lives or have been treacherously killed. "The Sri Lankan Government may have declared a military victory. But it does not realize that it is a hollow victory. It has completely lost the trust and confidence of the Tamils in Sri Lanka," he further said in an exclusive interview.

TamilNet: The Sri Lankan Government has declared the war won and has claimed that Mr Pirapaharan, the leader of LTTE has been killed. Has Colombo really won the war?

Pathmanathan: The Sri Lankan government makes unverified claims. I am only able to ascertain that our National Leader is alive and well. It is true that many of our senior members and leaders have either given up their lives or been treacherously killed. This is very unfortunate, but it is important to realize that our struggle will continue until the aspirations of our people are realized.

TamilNet: In light of the current situation, what is the future of the LTTE?

Pathmanathan: In several earlier statements we have clearly expressed the willingness of our movement to explore a solution to the Tamil national question given that credible political means are established enabling us to seek a political solution in lieu of a military strategy. We took this position in order to save the lives of our people. We could not continue to allow the Sri Lankan military nor the government to use the military option as an excuse to bomb and shell killing scores of people. But despite our plea to the International community to intervene with Sri Lanka and halt its offensive, Colombo decided to disregard and pursue its military push to what it viewed as the end. The information we received indicates that even cadres and leaders who had surrendered carrying white flags were mercilessly killed without any regards for international conventions. The international community too had refused to take a strong enough stand to convince the Sri Lankan Government to take a more conciliatory option.

We are extremely saddened by the turn of events. However, the future of Tamils in Sri Lanka and the Tamil national question still lingers on with no solution. The absence of a political process to address this and the need for a defensive mechanism to safeguard the Tamils is what drove the LTTE to take up arms in the first place. Today, an answer to this question is nowhere nearer.

The LTTE was mandated by the people to represent them and take forward the Tamil national question. At this juncture, we would like to reiterate that our movement is always prepared to consider viable alternative means to take the cause forward in accordance with the mandate of our people. We are also sure that Tamils living all over the world will unite as one people to contribute to this.

TamilNet: When you talk of a political process, the prevailing mood exhibited in Colombo and other parts of Sri Lanka displays hardly any sensitivity to the aspirations of the Tamil people. How do you view this?

Pathmanathan: The trend and sentiments that are engulfing the Sinhala people in Sri Lanka is unfortunate. If Tamils are considered as equal citizens of the country, they will need to be treated with dignity and respect. But, the government and its military encourage the raw display of chauvinism. This only divides the communities further and does not allow for enmities to be resolved. The treatment displayed is as though the Tamils have been vanquished. This dehumanizes our people and deepens the ethnic divide. We are afraid this will not pave the way for a harmonious co-existence in the island.

TamilNet: There are forces that talk of 'post-LTTE' and 'post-conflict' scenario attempting to regard the LTTE as a spent force at this point in time. How is the LTTE going to mobilize the people behind it and give them the necessary leadership?

Our national problem is viewed as Asia's longest-running conflict and our leadership is aware that it needs to adapt to emerging realities while evolving strategies. You will note that the Tamil Diaspora has rallied behind the LTTE and behind the homeland Tamils, showing their strong support world over. The latest carnage in Vanni has only strengthened the unity of the Tamils and our leadership around the world and made them more resolved in their pursuit for justice.

We are also aware that this cannot be achieved alone. We fully appreciate the role every Tamil person and Tamil political party has to play, both in the island of Sri Lanka and abroad, to ensure that the welfare and future of Tamils living in the island is foremost. We are willing to work with all parties to achieve this, including the Tamil parties functioning in India as well. We need to put the welfare of the Tamil people first.

Several Tamil parties in Sri Lanka once had taken up arms and fought for the same cause in pursuit of the Tamil national question. Fundamentally, we hope that they still honour these principles. At this juncture, we earnestly hope that they would come forward to work together to achieve this.

TamilNet: You mentioned that the international community had failed the Tamil people. How do you propose to regain international credibility to take forward your struggle?

Pathmanathan: The International community is fully aware of the discrimination and marginalization the Tamils have faced since the Independence in 1948. They are not ignorant of this. We feel we can build a credible position with the International community through political means.

We recognize the role of India as crucial in this respect. The Tamil people of Sri Lanka and the Tamils living in India share a common cultural and linguistic heritage. This binds us strongly not only with the Tamils in India but also with Tamils world over: in countries like South Africa, Malaysia, Mauritius, Singapore, Fiji and the Reunion not counting our own who have adopted the many nations of the world as theirs.

We have always considered interests of India and Tamil people lie on the same line and historically the Tamil people in the Island are true friends of the Indian nation. At this crucial time, we now urge India to take a just stand to ensure the safety, dignity and self-respect of Tamils in Sri Lanka. We need to act prudently at this point of time. We are fully aware that India has a key role to play geo-politically in our part of the world and we need to work very closely with them. The LTTE at this juncture is ready to work together with India to ensure the future of Tamils in the island of Sri Lanka.

Prabhakaran, top aides killed in Sri Lanka’s war zone

Colombo, May 18 (IANS) Velupillai Prabhakaran, the elusive leader of Sri Lanka’s feared Tamil Tigers, was killed Monday while trying to escape the battlezone in the island’s north along with two of his top aides, the military announced.
Prabhakaran, 54, was in a convoy of a van and an ambulance with Pottu Amman, head of the intelligence wing of the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE), and Sea Tigers chief Soosai when the military opened fire in an isolated strip of Mullaitivu district.

The deaths sparked frenzied celebrations in the capital Colombo and large parts of the Sinhalese populated central and southern provinces as people poured out of their homes, waved national flags and distributed sweets.

Prabhakaran’s death comes shortly after soldiers stumbled upon the bodies of several key LTTE leaders, including his son Charles Anthony, who headed the group’s IT wing and was being groomed to take over his father’s mantle.

Prabhakaran founded the LTTE in 1976 and built it into an awesome military machine that at one point controlled a third of Sri Lanka’s land territory and two-thirds of its coastline.

LTTE’s Prabhakaran shot dead along with leading cadre

Monday early hours around 3:00 a.m. Vanni local time, the LTTE Political Chief B. Nadesan and LTTE Peace Secretariat Director S. Puleedevan telephoned their contacts in Europe and informed them to tell the ICRC Head Office that only around 1,000 wounded cadres, civil officials of the LTTE and civilians remained in the so-called safety zone and there was no firing from the LTTE side. They urged the ICRC to evacuate the wounded. A few hours later, Colombo's Defence Ministry website claimed finding the dead bodies of Mr. Nadesan, Mr. Puleedevan, Mr. Ilango (Tamileelam Police Chief), and LTTE Leader V. Pirapaharan's son Mr. Charles Antony. The LTTE is yet to confirm, but initial reports indicate a determined massacre by the Sri Lanka Army (SLA).

On Sunday, SLA Commander Lt. Gen. Sarath Fonseka told AFP that he will not allow the LTTE to 'regroup' and will ensure that there is 'no future' for the Tigers.

He also said that "the firm decision of the political hierarchy not to go for talks with the LTTE terrorists until they lay down arms had contributed significantly to all these war victories."

During the last week both Nadesan and LTTE's International Relations Head S. Pathmanathan were welcoming the call by the US President Barack Obama and were expressing the willingness of the LTTE to heed his request.

However, Colombo has decided not to allow any opportunity for the LTTE to negotiate and to annihilate its leadership.

Both Obama's call and the LTTE's favourable response were not honoured by Colombo.

LTTE leader Prabhakaran reported dead as Tamil Tigers surrender

Surrounded on all sides by the Sri Lankan Army, the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE), or Tamil Tigers as they are more commonly termed, have announced their surrender amidst news their leader, Velupillai Prabhakaran, is dead.

The final round in what has been a long and drawn out campaign by the militant group for an independent Tamil state in the north and east of Sri Lanka came as news surfaced that the Sri Lankan military has recovered more than 150 bodies from the last remaining LTTE stonghold.

According to reports on CNN-IBN, the body of what is believed to be the 54-year-old LTTE leader, Velupillai Prabhakaran, along with about 150 others were found when government troops stormed the final LTTE stronghold in the Mullivaaikkaal area of Karaithuraipatru AGA division of Mullaitheevu district.

In a statement posted on the TamilNet website, the LTTE said its decades long struggle for a Tamil homeland, “has reached its bitter end.”

Sri Lankan military sources claim to have intercepted radio transmission in which the LTTE “Thalaivar” (leader) and “poraligal” (fighters) discussed “Veeramaranam” (heroic death) in accordance with their past practice of committing suicide.

The Sri Lankan government said the bodies of those found in the LTTE base were being taken to an army camp in Colombo where a post-mortem will be conducted to confirm the identities of the bodies.

Counting of votes in LokSabha polls to start tomorrow

On Saturday, political parties will not be able to send MPs, MLAs and other politicians entitled to security cover into counting halls as counting agents for candidates. To prevent chaos and ensure that the high security zone remains sanitised, the Election Commission of India has issued directions that anyone entitled to state security will not be allowed inside the counting hall.

For the big day when the fate of candidates fighting for the seven parliamentary seats in the capital will be known, the Election Commission of India wants to ensure that the process is executed in a foolproof manner without any scope for chaos. The directive is clear: "MPs, MLAs, MLCs, ministers or the mayor and any person who has been provided security by the state government shall not be allowed to perform duty as counting agents of candidates," the ECI said.

Even candidates whether an MP or an MLA contesting from a seat will not be allowed to carry along security personnel inside the hall. Only a candidate who may be entitled to SPG cover can have one SPG personnel present in the hall in plainclothes.

Announcing this directive, chief electoral officer, Delhi, Satbir Silas Bedi pointed out that the aim was to ensure minimum disturbance inside the hall and an uninterrupted fair counting process.

Rahul a young man, media distorted his comments: Mamata

Kolkata: Trinamool Congress chief Mamata Banerjee Sunday described Congress general secretary Rahul Gandhi as a "young man" and said the media had distorted his comments about seeking the Left support to form a government after the Lok Sabha polls.
Banerjee, who ruled out her joining the Bharatiya Janata Party-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) after the polls, claimed the Congress was neither too keen and nor would it need the Left parties' support to form a coalition government.

"Rahul Gandhi is a young man. His comments have been distorted... I don't think the Congress is very keen to go with the Communist Party of India-Marxist (or other Left parties)," Banerjee said at a meet-the-press in the Kolkata Press Club.

"He has only said that the Congress will provide support to the Left to form a government if the group got 180 seats. The Left is not contesting even that many seats. So the matter ends there," she said.

Earlier this week, Banerjee had threatened to snap ties with the Congress if it took support from the Left after Gandhi commented that his party would not be opposed to shaking hands again with the Communists.

To pacify its new ally, the Congress had then gone into a overdrive, telling the Trinamool chief that it had no plans to engage with the Communists - Trinamool's foremost foe.

A day after CPI-M general secretary Prakash Karat indicated that Banerjee could be headed to the NDA if the Congress-led United Progressive Alliance (UPA) failed to come to power, she said: "We always maintain transparency. We have an alliance with the Congress. So, we will not go to the NDA, or the BJP or the CPI-M."

Banerjee said the UPA could form a government on its own, without the Left support.

Ridiculing the talk about the Third Front, which includes Left parties, forming the next government, the Trinamool chief said: "How will they form a government? How will such a situation emerge? After all, they are going to draw big zeroes in their strongholds of Kerala, Tripura and West Bengal. That's the reason they are torturing people now."

Banerjee said her party will play a constructive role after the polls in helping to form a stable and "secular" government which can safeguard the country's security and integrity.

“Our ultimate goal is to secure for Tamil people (in Sri Lanka) equal status and equal rights,” Gandhi said at an election rally where Tamil Nadu Chief Minister and DMK chief M. Karunanidhi was also present.

She told the gathering she was “deeply pained and anguished” for “thousands and thousands of civilians” who were forced to flee the war zone as the Sri Lankan forces took on the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) in the north of the island nation.

Gandhi, who is also UPA chairperson, said India was firm that the Sri Lankan government moved the Tamils to safety zones and carried out humanitarian works.

Appealing to people in Tamil Nadu to vote for the Congress-led alliance in the on-going Lok Sabha elections, Gandhi said: “You gave us 40 of 40 (in Tamil Nadu and Puducherry in the 2004 Lok Sabha elections) and I urge you repeat.”

Gandhi also detailed the development works carried out by the UPA government in the county, and especially in Tamil Nadu.

London, May 9 (ANI): Rihanna has landed in a new furore after six of her alleged nude pictures found their way to the Internet.

The photos, claimed to be those of the R&B singer, show a naked woman while her face is obscured.

According to sources, only two snaps show the face of the 21-year-old, born as Robyn Rihanna Fenty, reports the Sun.

There is also a reported message written on one of the photos which appears to read ‘I love you, Robyn. I miss you’.

Her former beau Chris Brown can also be purportedly seen with a pair of pink knickers on his head.

The reports come when Brown faces two felony counts after allegedly punching, choking, and biting Rihanna before the Grammy’s.

The 19-year-old rapper, who could face five years in jail if convicted, pleaded not guilty and is due to return to court on April 29. (ANI)
